Before you start
What you need
- A 15-30 ft long line
- A lightweight drag line
- High-value treats or a toy reward
- Access to a secure fenced yard
Week 1 -- Long-Line Transition
Confirm on-leash readiness, then move to a long line in a fully secure area before any leash comes off.
By the end of this week: your dog checks in on their own with a light line dragging in a secure yard.
Day 1 -- Off-Leash Readiness Check
Confirm prerequisite skills are solid before starting.
Run sit, down, stay, recall, and leave-it on leash; identify the weakest skill to reinforce first this week.
Ready to move on when: All prerequisite skills at reliable on-leash level.
If it's not working: If your dog isn't hitting "All prerequisite skills at reliable on-leash level." yet, repeat today at yesterday's easier version and reward more often before adding anything new -- do not push forward on a skill that isn't holding.
Day 2 -- Long-Line Recall Refresh
Rebuild recall at distance with a safety line.
Use a 15-30 ft long line in a secure fenced area; recall at increasing distance, jackpot every success.
Ready to move on when: Reliable recall at 20+ feet on the line.
If it's not working: If your dog isn't hitting "Reliable recall at 20+ feet on the line." yet, repeat today at yesterday's easier version and reward more often before adding anything new -- do not push forward on a skill that isn't holding.
Day 3 -- Long-Line Stay at Distance
Add real distance to stay while still secured.
Sit or down stay while you walk out on the long line; return before the dog breaks position.
Ready to move on when: Stay holds while you reach the end of the line.
If it's not working: If your dog isn't hitting "Stay holds while you reach the end of the line." yet, repeat today at yesterday's easier version and reward more often before adding anything new -- do not push forward on a skill that isn't holding.
Week 2 -- True Off-Leash Basics
Build the core off-leash behaviors in the same secure, low-distraction area before adding any challenge.
By the end of this week: your dog recalls, holds position, and settles off leash in a secure area.
Day 8 -- Off-Leash Recall
Multiple short recalls at varying distances.
Practice several recalls at different distances in the secure area; heavy reinforcement, end on a clear win.
Ready to move on when: 4 of 5 recalls immediate, no leash.
If it's not working: If your dog isn't hitting "4 of 5 recalls immediate, no leash." yet, repeat today at yesterday's easier version and reward more often before adding anything new -- do not push forward on a skill that isn't holding.
Day 9 -- Off-Leash Position Changes
Cue sit/down from a distance, no leash.
Cue sit or down from several feet away; reward for responding without you walking in to help.
Ready to move on when: Dog responds at 10+ feet, off leash.
If it's not working: If your dog isn't hitting "Dog responds at 10+ feet, off leash." yet, repeat today at yesterday's easier version and reward more often before adding anything new -- do not push forward on a skill that isn't holding.
Day 10 -- Off-Leash Loose Structure
Reward the dog for choosing to stay near you.
Walk the secure area off leash; reward the dog for voluntarily staying close, not for a formal heel position.
Ready to move on when: Dog stays within a few feet without being called back repeatedly.
If it's not working: If your dog isn't hitting "Dog stays within a few feet without being called back repeatedly." yet, repeat today at yesterday's easier version and reward more often before adding anything new -- do not push forward on a skill that isn't holding.
Week 3 -- Mild Distraction and Semi-Open Space
Add the first real distractions while still inside a secure area, then move to a bigger space on the long line.
By the end of this week: your dog holds recall and stay with a mild distraction present, in a larger space.
Day 15 -- Off-Leash + Mild Distraction (Toy)
Add a visible but inactive distraction.
Practice recall and stay with a toy visible but not in active play.
Ready to move on when: No meaningful drop in performance with the toy present.
If it's not working: If your dog isn't hitting "No meaningful drop in performance with the toy present." yet, repeat today at yesterday's easier version and reward more often before adding anything new -- do not push forward on a skill that isn't holding.
Day 16 -- Off-Leash + Mild Distraction (Second Person)
Add a calm second person nearby.
Have a second person move calmly nearby during recall and stay practice.
Ready to move on when: Dog completes the exercise without fixating on the second person.
If it's not working: If your dog isn't hitting "Dog completes the exercise without fixating on the second person." yet, repeat today at yesterday's easier version and reward more often before adding anything new -- do not push forward on a skill that isn't holding.
Day 17 -- Long-Line in Semi-Open Space
Generalize to a bigger secure area.
Move to a larger secure space (bigger yard, empty sport court) on the long line; recall and stay at greater distance.
Ready to move on when: Comparable performance to the small secure area.
If it's not working: If your dog isn't hitting "Comparable performance to the small secure area." yet, repeat today at yesterday's easier version and reward more often before adding anything new -- do not push forward on a skill that isn't holding.
Week 4 -- Real Distractions in a Legal Off-Leash Area
Move to a legal off-leash space and start layering real-world distractions one at a time.
By the end of this week: your dog completes a short, successful session in a real legal off-leash area.
Day 22 -- Legal Off-Leash Area Scouting
Assess a new area before entering it off leash.
Identify a legal, secure off-leash park; observe from outside first and assess the dog's arousal before entering.
Ready to move on when: Dog stays under threshold while observing from outside.
If it's not working: If your dog isn't hitting "Dog stays under threshold while observing from outside." yet, repeat today at yesterday's easier version and reward more often before adding anything new -- do not push forward on a skill that isn't holding.
Day 23 -- First Session in the New Legal Area
Keep the first real session short and easy.
Short off-leash session with high-value rewards; leave before the dog goes over threshold.
Ready to move on when: Session ends on a successful recall, not a struggle.
If it's not working: If your dog isn't hitting "Session ends on a successful recall, not a struggle." yet, repeat today at yesterday's easier version and reward more often before adding anything new -- do not push forward on a skill that isn't holding.
Day 24 -- Recall Away From Another Dog
Practice recall with a controlled canine distraction.
Recall the dog with another dog visible at a distance you can control.
Ready to move on when: Reliable recall with another dog visible at a safe distance.
If it's not working: If your dog isn't hitting "Reliable recall with another dog visible at a safe distance." yet, repeat today at yesterday's easier version and reward more often before adding anything new -- do not push forward on a skill that isn't holding.
Week 5 -- Generalization Across Real Environments
Prove the skills transfer to the dog's actual world, not just the training locations used so far.
By the end of this week: your dog performs comparably in at least two different legal off-leash locations.
Day 29 -- New Environment -- Canal Path (Long Line First)
Generalize to a canal path safely.
Work loose structure and recall along a canal path on the long line before considering off leash there.
Ready to move on when: Comparable performance to the legal off-leash area, on the line.
If it's not working: If your dog isn't hitting "Comparable performance to the legal off-leash area, on the line." yet, repeat today at yesterday's easier version and reward more often before adding anything new -- do not push forward on a skill that isn't holding.
Day 30 -- New Environment -- Local Trail (Long Line)
Generalize to trail terrain and new scents.
Repeat trail-side work on the long line; treat new smells and possible wildlife as real distractions to work around, not ignore.
Ready to move on when: Dog stays responsive despite new terrain and scent.
If it's not working: If your dog isn't hitting "Dog stays responsive despite new terrain and scent." yet, repeat today at yesterday's easier version and reward more often before adding anything new -- do not push forward on a skill that isn't holding.
Day 31 -- Off-Leash in a Second Legal Area
Confirm skills transfer beyond the first location.
Repeat core off-leash exercises in a different secure, legal area than Week 4.
Ready to move on when: Comparable performance to the first legal area.
If it's not working: If your dog isn't hitting "Comparable performance to the first legal area." yet, repeat today at yesterday's easier version and reward more often before adding anything new -- do not push forward on a skill that isn't holding.
Week 6 -- Proofing the Hardest Distractions
Layer in the distractions most likely to cause a real failure, and review safety and legal boundaries.
By the end of this week: your dog holds recall and stay against the two toughest distractions you can safely set up.
Day 36 -- Wildlife/Scent Distraction Awareness
Prioritize safety over testing near scent hazards.
Practice recall on the long line near an area with likely scent distractions, such as a desert wash edge; do not test off leash here.
Ready to move on when: Dog remains manageable on the line despite strong scent.
If it's not working: If your dog isn't hitting "Dog remains manageable on the line despite strong scent." yet, repeat today at yesterday's easier version and reward more often before adding anything new -- do not push forward on a skill that isn't holding.
Day 37 -- High-Value Distraction -- Other Dog Play
Recall away from active canine play.
At a manageable distance, recall the dog away from another dog mid-play; reward with something better than the play itself.
Ready to move on when: Dog leaves active play within 5-10 seconds of the cue.
If it's not working: If your dog isn't hitting "Dog leaves active play within 5-10 seconds of the cue." yet, repeat today at yesterday's easier version and reward more often before adding anything new -- do not push forward on a skill that isn't holding.
Day 38 -- Recall Under Real Temptation
Test recall against fast-movement triggers, safely.
Practice only where safe and legal, with the long line attached as a backup if there is any doubt.
Ready to move on when: Dog either recalls or is safely stopped by the line without incident.
If it's not working: If your dog isn't hitting "Dog either recalls or is safely stopped by the line without incident." yet, repeat today at yesterday's easier version and reward more often before adding anything new -- do not push forward on a skill that isn't holding.
Week 7 -- Final Integration
Prove the full skill set on a real outing and hand off ongoing maintenance to the owner.
By the end of this week: you can run a full off-leash outing alone, start to finish, with no safety incidents.
Day 43 -- Full Off-Leash Outing
Run a complete real outing using every skill.
Complete a real trail or park outing using recall, stay, leave-it, settle, and the emergency recall as needed.
Ready to move on when: Full outing completed with no safety incidents.
If it's not working: If your dog isn't hitting "Full outing completed with no safety incidents." yet, repeat today at yesterday's easier version and reward more often before adding anything new -- do not push forward on a skill that isn't holding.
Day 44 -- Owner-Led Session
Hand primary handling to the owner.
The owner runs the full outing alone while the trainer observes and coaches from a distance.
Ready to move on when: Owner successfully handles the dog through the full outing.
If it's not working: If your dog isn't hitting "Owner successfully handles the dog through the full outing." yet, repeat today at yesterday's easier version and reward more often before adding anything new -- do not push forward on a skill that isn't holding.
Day 45 -- Off-Leash Readiness Sign-Off & Maintenance Plan
Confirm scope of reliability and set the maintenance schedule.
Document which environments and conditions the dog has demonstrated reliability in, and write the ongoing maintenance schedule to keep the skill sharp.
Ready to move on when: Sign-off documented; maintenance plan in place.
If it's not working: If your dog isn't hitting "Sign-off documented; maintenance plan in place." yet, repeat today at yesterday's easier version and reward more often before adding anything new -- do not push forward on a skill that isn't holding.
Where you land
Your dog reliably recalls, holds position, and settles off leash across multiple real, legal environments -- and you have a documented maintenance schedule for keeping it that way.
Keep it, or level up
